-- FRONTIER ROUND-UP --

We chose the broader 'Frontier' label to be able to canvas the British & European colonial interactions with the North American wilderness and its native inhabitants, as well as the later 'taming' of the wild northern territories.

Norman Baer, THE RAVEN - "The Pulitzer Prize winning biography of Sam Houston-by Marquis James" - The Paperback Library paperback release.  Regarding the artist identification, you can see in a better scan of the cover the 'BAER' signature and I believe the first initial 'N.' was lost to the left crop.  You'll find that the signature's appearance matches many of the paintings & inkwash-illustrations he executed for the 'men's adventure magazines' of the period.

Stanley Borack, BOUNTY GUNS - "A hardcase redhead in a rangeland feud" - One of Dell's several paperback releases of this iconic western by 'Luke Short' (Frederick Dilley Glidden).  Reportedly Borack's credit is within the book itself.

Bill Burnett, SILVERTIP'S ROUNDUP, (FOUR COLOR # 637) - "He tracked the outlaw gang with a half-wild timber wolf !" - An adaptation of Max Brand's novel of the same name.

Earl Cordery, [unknown title], (in AMERICAN WEEKLY-unknown issue) - This interior illustration, for an article/story within, reportedly appeared in the late 1940s or the 1950s decade.

Mel Crawford, GENE AUTRY - A Little Golden Book release

Robert Crofut, BULLET BARRICADE - "He brought justice to a land the law had never reached." - The Leisure Books paperback release of this story by Leslie Erenwein.

Gino D'Achille, CRIMSON DESERT - "The Apaches had broken out-and only one man might stop them." - Ballantine's paperback release of E.E. Halleran's western.  A few years later Futura Publications would re-use this art for their paperback release of THUNDER MOUNTAIN by Clair Huffaker, and then decades later, Center Point Publications would do the same for their paperback release of William Colt MacDonald's THUNDERBIRD TRAIL.

Rafael DeSoto, THE GOPHER, (FOUR COLOR # 329(back cover)) - The signature seen on the painting says simply "DE SOTO", in all capitals, and it's not really Rafael DeSoto's 'regular' signature, but if you scour his collection from The Illustrated Press, you can indeed find one or two that match it.

Clarence Doore, 5 WESTERN NOVELS 1953, (5 WESTERN NOVELS MAGAZINE 1953-June) - "featuring Pistol Partners by Lee Floren--Dead Man's Gold by Larry Harris--The Necktie Party by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson--Trail Drive Boss by William Hopson--Six Gun Sweepstakes by Walker A. Tompkins").

  B. Eastman, SAN DIEGO SIRENS, (SPUR # 23) - "Spur runs into double trouble and a triple cross." - Another release in this Leisure Books adult-western series by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).  This was the art re-used when they released the double-edition that included this story.  Eastman's signature is evident on the full cover.

William George, MENACE OF THE MOUNTAINS, (KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED # 13)

William George, [unknown title], (RED RYDER COMICS # 123)

William George, STOLEN SECRETS, (KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED # 14)

William George, [unknown title], (FOUR COLOR # 599) - Adventures of Ben Bowie and his Mountain Men.  When this canvas came to auction, it was identified then as having been created by Bill George.

William George, TRAIL OF A KILLER, (SERGEANT PRESTON OF THE YUKON # 8)

William George, WESTERN MARSHAL, (FOUR COLOR # 534) - A comic adaptation of Ernest Haycox's Trail Town.

William George, TO THE LAST MAN, (FOUR COLOR # 616) - "The West wasn't big enough for them all" - Comic adaptation of the Zane Grey story.

George Gross, SMOKY - "All the excitement of the great outdoors thunders across the screen! The epic story of an outlaw mustang...an untamed girl--and the man who mastered them both! Starring Fess Parker---that 'Man of the West' in an exciting new role !" - One of the film adaptations of Smoky The Cowhorse by Will James.  The art also appeared, probably with the painting's original sky-background, on the cover of Dell Comic's MOVIE CLASSIC #746 ("The exciting saga of a cowboy and the wild horse nobody could tame!").  Not to mention being the cover of the Bantam Books movie-tie-in paperback release of the James book ("one of the world's most famous and best-loved animal stories--now an unforgettable 20th Century-Fox motion picture!").

George Gross, EASY COMPANY AND THE HEADLINE HUNTER, (EASY COMPANY # 10) - "A reporter covering the Indian War gets too near the action - and 'Easy' winds up covering him !" - Another release in Jove's adult-western paperback series by 'John Wesley Howard' (Ken Bjorgum).

John Leone, BOUNTY GUNS - "A price on his head-and a whole town waiting to collect." - One of several Dell paperback editions of Luke Short's western.  Leone is credited on the back cover.

Ron Lesser, DEATH HUNTER, (RENEGADE # 4) - "Captain Gringo - free and fighting.  No man can stop him.  No woman can hold him." - The fourth release of this adult-western series from Warner Books by 'Ramsay Thorne' (Lou Cameron).

Ron Lesser, RENEGADE, (RENEGADE # 1) - "He's unshakable, unstoppable, unkillable . . . Captain Gringo, the Legend of the Border" - The first release of this adult-western series from Warner Books by 'Ramsay Thorne' (Lou Cameron).  A few years later the art was utilized once again for another adult-western series from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham), specifically ARIZONA FANCY LADY, (SPUR # 2 (first trio)) whose blurb ran: "Spur was out to capture a diehard rebel colonel, but one woman was aiming to capture him"

Ron Lesser, BLOOD RUNNER, (RENEGADE # 2) - "Unshakable, unstoppable, unkillable Captain Gringo" - Another release of this adult-western series from Warner Books by 'Ramsay Thorne' (Lou Cameron).  A few years later the art was flipped and utilized once again, this time for another adult-western series, Spur, from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham), specifically HIGH PLAINS TEMPTRESS, (SPUR # 1 (first trio)) whose blurb ran: "If Spur didn't stop the raiders, they'd take every cent - and every woman - in the town !"

Joe Lombardero, EASY COMPANY AND THE SHEEP RANCHERS, (EASY COMPANY # 21) - "'Easy' is in the crossfire when sheepherders threaten the peace--and cattlemen seek frontier revenge !" - Another release in Jove's adult-western paperback series by 'John Wesley Howard' (Ken Bjorgum).

Milton Luros, CONFESSION OF A PAID KILLER. (REAL MEN 1956-Mar) - "Confession Of A Paid Killer // The Day They Drop The Bomb // Exclusive! The Lusts and Loves Of Peron" - The cover was featured in Taschen's MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES.

Frank McCarthy, BORDER RENEGADE - "He was trapped - between Texas and Hell !" - The Crest paperback release of this story by Dudley Dean ("author of Six Gun Vengeance").  The art was later used by the Danish Winthers Publisher for DØden Skyder Med Skarpt [Death Shoots Sharply] which is a translation of some book by Norman A. Fox, but re-titled here.

Gerald McConnell, LONE STAR ROUNDUP - "The ridin' rattler of the Brasada" - Dean Owen's western, released as one-half of an Ace Double (the other side being Tom West's 'Write His Name In Gunsmoke').

Robert McGinnis, MARAUDER'S MOON - "A blazing story of night riders . . . and a man who wouldn't run" - Dell's paperback release of the western by 'Luke Short' (Frederick Dilley Glidden).

Bruce Minney, THE LONE RANGER AND THE MYSTERY RANCH, (LONE RANGER # 2) - "'With his faithful Indian companion, Tonto, the daring and resourceful rider of the plains led the fight for law and order in the early western United States.  Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice.'" - Another release in this western series from Pinnacle by Fran Striker.  While this image does appear in Minney's collection, the opportunity was missed to 'well-present' it (as this site defines that).

John Parker, [unknown title], (FOUR COLOR # 557) - Adventures of Ben Bowie and his Mountain Men.

John Parker, [unknown title], (THE CISCO KID # 24) - One trusted source felt that Ernest Nordli was associated with this piece in some way.

Samson Pollen, EASY COMPANY AND THE TWILIGHT SNIPER, (EASY COMPANY # 20) - "Only three things moved on the sun-baked plains, buffalo, bushwackers, and bullets..." - Another Jove Books paperback release in this adult-western series of 'John Wesley Howard' (this time, Paul Lederer).

Samson Pollen, BOISE BELL, (SPUR # 30) - "Spur was up against a rough-riding mob and a hard-loving lady." - Another release in this adult-western series from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

Samson Pollen, EASY COMPANY AND THE INDIAN DOCTOR, (EASY COMPANY # 19) - "'Easy' risks a bloody ambush to save a woman's life when rustlers send the Sioux on the warpath !" - Another release in Jove's adult-western paperback series by 'John Wesley Howard' (Ken Bjorgum).

Samson Pollen, EASY COMPANY AND THE BIG GAME HUNTER, (EASY COMPANY # 19) - "'Easy' goes big game hunting with a sharpshooting aristocrat !" - Another release in Jove's adult-western paperback series by 'John Wesley Howard' (Ken Bjorgum).

Samson Pollen, TALL TIMBER TROLLOP, (SPUR GIANT 1989) - "Gunslinging gangs, wild women, and non-stop Western action !" - Another release in this adult-western series from Leisure Books by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham).

Samson Pollen, EASY COMPANY AND THE BIG BLIZZARD, (EASY COMPANY # 15) - "If the snow and wolves didn't get 'Easy,' the Cheyenne renegades would . . ." - Another release in Jove's adult-western paperback series by 'John Wesley Howard' (Ken Bjorgum).

Samson Pollen, PLAINS PARAMOUR, (SPUR # 29) - This canvas is clearly signed by Pollen.  Note that this was the first volume that used on the covers a new portrait-sigil in the bottom corner that would last until the end of the series (I'd come to assume it was by George Wilson).

Samson Pollen, IN DEADWOOD, (LONGARM # 45) - "Longarm meets a notorious lady gunfighter and walks into the cross-fire of murderous mining barons" - Another Jove paperback release in this adult western series by Tabor Evans.

Samson Pollen, PEACEMAKER PASS, (BUCKSKIN # 21) - "In the frozen hell of Alaska, Morgan was thawed by hot lead and even hotter women." - Another release in this adult-western series from Leisure Books by Kit Dalton.

Phil Ronfor, NEW ORLEANS' HOT-BLOODIED HUSSY, (MALE 1956-Oct) - "New Orleans' Hot-Bloodied Hussy (The South's greatest spy) // Special Book Bonus - Hardboiled (A hungry doll with a heart like a rock)" - There may have been no actual intention for associating this with the contents-page item we've chosen to entitle this with.  The artist's credit appears on the contents-page of this magazine (but I have seen Vic Prezio erroneously attributed on the interweb).

Tom Ryan, THE HARD PURSUED, (DELL) - "He was hunted by the law and the lawless" - This painting was first used for this Dell Books release of Norman A. Fox's novel The Hard Pursued and was then later re-purposed to grace their comic, IDAHO #2 (which carried the blurb: "The fury of blazing guns on the open range as homesteader battles cattleman !")

Walter Stackpool, ACES WILD, (BENEDICT & BRAZOS # 1) - The beginning of a western series about a former Yankee & former Confederate forced by circumstance to adventure together, originally appearing in print in Australia before achieving a more international cachet.

Murray Tinkleman, CODE OF THE WEST - "There was no man alive who could ignore the challenge of the deadly pact" - The Avon paperback release of this story by Zane Grey, displaying the singular artistry of Tinkleman.  An excerpt of this piece was 'well-presented' in STEVE HOLLAND-COWBOY.

Murray Tinkleman, UNDER THE TONTO RIM - "Edd Denmeade was looking for a wife, not for trouble, but he found both !" - The Avon paperback release of this story by Zane Grey, displaying the singular artistry of Tinkleman.
